“fadin'”, by Lucky Duck: In interview!

Lucky Duck is a native New Yorker based in Queens, blending country, pop, and rock influences while following wherever his songwriting journey takes him. Known for writing songs that tackle uncomfortable topics, Lucky uses music as a way to express what’s often difficult to say. Here’s Lucky Duck in interview about his latest single, “fadin'”!

1. What is the origin behind the moniker “Lucky Duck”?

I’m a quirky girl and grew up saying a lotta random phrases. “Lucky duck” was one of em, i believe it’s a british saying and it’s just a term for someone quite lucky, and i believe i first heard it from my mum, who is aussie. I debuted with blonde hair, and the look was giving lucky duck. and i have been fortunate to be p lucky in life so far, so i chose lucky duck. An artist name can be quite hard to come up with, but i didnt wanna overthink it, so i was like “this is kinda catchy. let’s run wit it”. it’s also js a name, it’s not super deep and i aint bound to it. i also love the contrast between my name which is giving like soft n cute, but in my music i like to rock out and let it rip. i feel like ppl r always surprised when they learn lucky duck makes rock music.

2. Who would you cite as influences and inspirations in your musical journey?

i would say myself like my life and my emotions inspire my music; i inspire me to keep going cuz i dont wanna give up. music has been mi primer amor desde 14 años (tengo 24 años ahora) and it’s one of the longest relationships de mi vida.i love me, im proud of me, i inspire me

each song ive put out so far has had it’s own world and influences. for my debut single, “in my head” i flipped a throwback jason derulo hit. for my single, FMO i was inspired by tame impala, amy winehouse, and jimi hendrix. My new single fadin is inspired by U2, boygenius and clairo. my music taste is all over the place and i love it. but mainly im js inspired by ppl who r consistently at the helm of their creative vision like pharrel, sza, tinashe, etc…

3. What’s the story behind the song “fadin’”?

I started writing this record in May 2023 while I was going through a breakup. This record is about a relationship that you and your partner know is headed for the end, and you’ve both for whatever reason have decided to just let it happen… it’s freeing, it’s claustrophobic, it’s anxiety-inducing, it’s emotional AF, it’s life. I tried my best to capture all those feelings in this song. I always try to be raw and honest in my music, even if it sometimes doesn’t paint me in the best light. Sometimes I’m the villain in the song, but I’m going to own my ugly moments and imperfections and do better moving forward.

This song was produced and mixed by my girl, the amazing and talented Denise Barbarita and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer and musician, Chris Allgood.

We recorded all the production in a 7-hour session. That was my first time being in the room while everything was being recorded live since pre-pandemic, so that was a sick experience to witness and hear. Shoutout to Steve Jabas on the guitar; he laid down like 50+ guitar parts, he’s a beast!

4. What are your thoughts about the increasing use of AI in the songwriting process?

i dont have any thoughts on this.

5. What’s next for Lucky duck. In terms of genres, collaborations and musical styles? Where would you want to explore musically next?

rn im Promoting tf outta fadin cuz i frickin love this song, man. i have a single coming out top of next year called “i want that”. it’s like country mixed with pop and hip hop; it’s cute n fun. movin forward, i wanna make pop music, i wanna dance. i wanna make music tht im actually bumpin everyday. like i do love alt and rock music but i feel like i had to get tht angst outta my system cuz all those songs were written so long ago like in my late teens, early 20’s. im happier now and wanna explore more up tempo sounds. rn im challenging myself in songwriting and writing abt different intimate subject matters. and yea im always open to collabs with dope ppl and good energies so HML!

6. Whenever you’re not out making music, what are some things you enjoy doing to keep the mind sharp and creative?

i like werkin out, cooking, hanging with the homies, travelling, goin to museums, driving, partying on occasion. everything inspires me. my friends inspire me. love in all it’s many forms inspire me. i write the best songs when i let inspiration find me!
