“For A While”, by Fallen Letters: Pushing the boundaries of alt metal!

“For A While” is the latest track by the alt rock/metal duo Fallen Letters, based out of Bangalore, India. Made of two dynamic and versatile musicians in Vishal Naidu and Aditya Ramesh, their work fuses the darker undertones from legendary outfits like Opeth and Deftones, while bringing in a distinctive, more introspective and nuanced take of their own. Keep reading for my thoughts!

The duo are no strangers to the studio– each having dallied around in past projects and solo releases prior to Fallen Letters– and that shows in the sheer depth of the songwriting at play here; nuanced melodies, graceful countermelodies that don’t go over the top yet communicate the point eloquently; Fallen Letters make it sound like it’s par for their course, and it’s something I cannot agree with more. There’s an evocative quality to “For A While” that settles within you from the moment you press play, and goes all the way till you press rewind– and I say that without exaggeration.

From the opening notes, the clean electric guitar finds itself swimming in a sea of cinematic, dramatic flair, accompanied by the soft, moody piano, setting the stage for the drums and the vocals to join the fray; and when they do, we’re quickly settled into Vishal’s clean singing style that’s found quite the following in recent days; and this, layered with the tight, captivating drumming brings us to crescendo after crescendo that pays off, oh so better than the one before.

The energy dynamic on “For A While” strikes just the right balance between intense and idyllic– with relaxing sections that precede the infectious blast of energy with the subtle hints of darker metal genres (thinking Alcest, anybody?), and the bridge section towards the middle of the song serves to accentuate just that. The breakdown that ensues right after is expertly written, with odd meters and rhythms that give you something new to poke your ears at every single time you hear it, and if that is not a hallmark of great songwriting, I’m dumbfounded as to what else is.

So, “For A While”, by Fallen Letters: Upwards and onwards! The way this song takes you through emotion and makes time freeze in a bottle, really breeds intrigue into the kind of music Fallen Letters will have for us in the future. Easy two-thumbs-up recommendation on this one– check it out here!
